About the Australian School of Copywriting (ASC):

Bernadette Schwerdt

What do we do?

We:

  • train students in the art of writing copy. The main source of income for new copywriters are small business* enterprises (SMEs) so we specialize in providing real-world, practical techniques on writing copy for these types of companies.

  • cater for students looking to work in the high-powered world of advertising agencies. We are the first stop for students seeking to gain a solid grounding in the principles of advertising. Our courses are the ideal training ground for those seeking to apply for Award School or internships/work experience with ad agencies or indeed, any course requiring a portfolio of work.

  • provide all students with the opportunity to work with real clients with real businesses.
- Seminar students are introduced to a client as part of the Guest Client exercise.
- Home Study students are required to source their first Guest Client (using the templates, client letters and scripts provided in the manual), as part of their final assignment. Of course, we will provide leads and contacts if the students are too shy or inexperienced to source their own first client.
  • provide graduate copywriters with the opportunity to list their names on our ‘Copywriter for Hire’ noticeboard. We often get requests from clients seeking copywriters to create work for them. Graduates will be able to pitch for this work based on their experience, portfolio and desire to build their business.

Clients may seek copywriters to work in one of three ways:

1. unpaid (work experience)

2. for contra (exchange of goods and services, no money changes hands),

3. paid (based on an fee agreed to between the copywriter and the client).
  • provide free advice and information to anyone seeking information on how to become a copywriter. We also refer people to competitive courses if they are seeking alternative forms of training, such as a diploma in advertising or creative writing or a career in marketing or PR.

  • raise awareness of the importance copywriters play in helping small businesses create high quality advertising material.

  • are dedicated to raising the standards of copywriting tuition and copywriting as a profession.

* The title small business may refer to the number of employees in the company (generally 20 or under), but it’s not necessarily a reflection of their turnover or profit. In a globalised and ‘outsourced’ world, the smart companies are running lean and making huge profits, so don’t be misled by the title “small” business. It can mean “big” business.

Our Mission:

Our mission is to give novice copywriters a practical and intense immersion in the world of copywriting so that they can:

  • discover if copywriting is the right industry for them (before they commit to a longer, more expensive course)

  • find out if they have a talent for copywriting

  • improve their writing ability (not just their copywriting skills)

  • source work as copywriters

  • create a source of part-time or full-time income

  • set up a freelance writing business that gives them independence, satisfaction and financial freedom

  • find work in the advertising industry – in an advertising agency, television or radio network, magazine or marketing company

  • use their existing experience and contacts to source copywriting work

Our role is to guide, inspire, enthuse, coach and guide each participant on their path to financial freedom through copywriting.

Who is the ASC?

The ASC was founded by Bernadette Schwerdt in 2001.

The copywriting course started life when Bernadette was invited by a real estate group to train their in-house team of new copywriters.

The course proved so effective she offered it to the wider market. The first seminar sold out within days. Since then, the course has been completed by over 800 students. Seminars are regularly held in Melbourne. Students from other states enrol in the Home Study course.

We believe the Copywriting: Writing For Profit is the most comprehensive copywriting training programme offered in Australia:

  • For Home Study students, the course offers 3 hours of one-on-one coaching (4 x 45-minute coaching calls). To our knowledge, no other course on the market offers this level of personal attention.

  • For seminar students, they have access to the tutors for the duration of the course and can seek feedback, coaching, advice and guidance at any time throughout the 5-week course.
- At the end of each seminar course, each student is invited to participate in a free 3-hour Group Coaching Teleclass. This free Coaching Call (valued at $900) provides step by step instructions on how to maintain the momentum created by the course. Studies show that 93% of students fail to implement what they learn in a course unless they put it into practice within 10 days.

- Home Study students are welcome to sit in on these calls at any time.

The ASC is not an accredited body and has no professional affiliations that render it dependent on any form of funding or endorsement.

The Copywriting: Writing for Profit course is approved and endorsed by the following organizations:

  • MU Student Union Ltd, a fully-owned subsidiary of the University of Melbourne

  • The NSW Writer’s Centre

  • The Victorian Writer’s Centre

You are able to enrol in the course through any of these organizations. You can also enrol directly online or over the phone (03) 9372 0800 or by email through the ASC by completing the Enrolment Form. The price of the Copywriting courses is the same no matter who you book through.

When you enrol via any of these organizations, you automatically become a client of the ASC. Your details are sent through to us so that we can contact you with updates on course dates, venues, coaching appointments and other administrative matters.

Although written with the Australian and Asian markets in mind, the Copywriting courses are appropriate for anyone fluent in English.
